A Sunday morning in the Madikwe

Wild Dogs in the early morning light. Wild Dogs in the early morning light.
This was a morning to remember!  Just as the sun was starting to peak its head over the horizon, we saw a pack of Wild Dogs trotting down the dirt road, scanning the bush periodically for opportunities.  We were delighted to see them, as we spent most of the day before looking for them, but without any luck, none of the vehicles had seen more than just their tracks.  It is amazing how effectively they can disappear in the park.  For them too the night was long,  as soon they settled down for a rest next to the road.  Satisfied that we will not see any action, we continued our drive.

Lionesses and Cubs Lionesses and Cubs
Around the next corner, we encountered a pride of lions, consisting of 2 lionesses with 5 cubs, quietly walking down the road. They had obviously just eaten, as their bellies were round and fat.  We watched them till they disappeared into the bushes to a nearby spring … about 500 meters further we found the meal.

It was immediately clear what happened, a large Male lion, had chased the lionesses and cubs away and was now having his share of the Wildebeest.  A young lioness, not ready to give us yet, was still standing on the side, hoping for another bite, but not brave enough to try and take it.

The scene became busier, with the arrival of 2 Jackal and soon after that, also a brown hyena,   arrived  on the side lines. All licking their lips for a share of this kill.

It was at this point that the male decided to drag his meal deeper into the bush and into the shade.  Leaving little evidence behind of the drama that unfolded there that morning.
